Your camping trip will be different if you bring your trailer. Although you may be tempted to pack more than you actually need, you can quickly find your travel trailer feeling cramped if you bring too much.

Preparing for your first trip in a travel trailer is a good idea. Make a list of all the things you absolutely must have. You can also refer to my checklist below. These are the essentials that will get you through the trip without the need to stop at a shop. You’ll often find that you can do without a lot of these essentials.

Tips for Packing for Your First Travel Trailer Camping Trip

  • You can plan your meals ahead of time

It is a huge help to know exactly what food you should bring and how many of each ingredient you will need when packing your travel trailer. You should always overpack your food, as you don’t want it to go bad. Also, bring as many canned and dry items as you can. Avoid glass storage containers as they can be broken or smashed on the road.

  • Secure Loose Products

Even though it seems inevitable that your travel trailer will be moved around on every road trip, making sure that you secure any loose items before you leave will help to ensure they don’t get damaged and that you don’t end up in a big mess.

Place everything in cabinets or closets. Keep heavy items off the ground. Slip-resistant shelf papers and storage containers can be used to hold individual items.

  • Use Bungee Cables

Camper trailers are equipped with closet and cabinet doors that click shut. But you’d be amazed at how easy it is for them to open. While in transit, I recommend that all doors be secured with bungee cable.

  • Know your trailer weight limit

Each camping trailer comes with a weight limit. This is the maximum load your trailer can withstand without causing structural damage. This limit will be important for your safety and that of others. It also helps to ensure the durability of your trailer.

  • Balance the load

After you have chosen the items you wish to bring on your camping trip it is time to pack them all into the trailer. When you do this, ensure that the load is evenly distributed throughout the trailer. If possible, place more weight towards the front. This will prevent tire blowouts and axel strain as well as a lopsided trailer.

  • Prime Your Travel Trailer

Do a thorough inspection of your camper before you go on your camping trip. Check that your tanks have been emptied. Unplug the water hose and pull in any awnings. Take off all wheel chocks and jacks. Next, check your tire pressure and make sure that your hitch is secure.
